Every year, in celebration of their independence, Haitian families gather together to feast in honor of a line of ancestors who fought for their freedom. The centerpiece of the festivity is the joumou soup— a traditional soup dating back to centuries ago. The documentary Liberty in a Soup follows two Haitian families and a chef over the course of three days to see how they prepare the soup and keep the tradition alive. It also contextualizes the custom within the history of the Haitian Revolution.

Cosponsored by the MultiCultural Center and the Department of Global Studies
